While Josep Guardiola cruised to victory in his first game as Barca boss, Hibs counterpart Mixu Paatelainen was left facing the prospect of lifting his players for a second time with the start of the new season still several weeks away.

A 4-0 aggregate defeat to Swedish outfit Elfsborg saw the Edinburgh side crash out of the Intertoto Cup earlier this month - tonight, Barca racked up as many goals in the opening 26 minutes.

An Eidur Gudjohnsen double and goals from Lionel Messi and Pedro in the first half were followed by further breakthroughs from Bojan and Yaya Toure after the break as Hibs were outclassed.

Daniel Alves and Gerard Pique made their debuts for Barcelona from the start, while fellow summer signings Martin Caceres, Alexander Hleb and Seydou Keita started on the bench.

Alves paved the way for the opening goal after just five minutes, sending a teasing ball into the packed box. A disastrous attempt at a clearance from Chris Hogg landed at the feet of Gudjohnsen at the edge of the area - and the former Bolton and Chelsea striker left Andy McNeil helpless in the Hibs goal with a well-placed shot.

Excitement rippled through the Murrayfield crowd when Andy O'Brien collected a long ball out on the left flank and squared into the path of the onrushing Steven Fletcher - only for Victor Valdes to beat him to the ball and smother before the striker could pull the trigger.

Any hopes of the host team salvaging a result from this friendly were then shattered in two devastating minutes.

With 15 minutes on the clock, Victor Vazquez slipped the ball through to Messi and he skipped past Rob Jones and Ian Murray before curling a superb shot into the back of the net.

The build-up to the third goal was simply breathtaking. A cheeky backheel from Alves on the edge of the six-yard box found Messi and he supplied the pass for Thierry Henry to set up Gudjohnsen for his second of the evening, the effort taking a deflection off Hogg en-route to goal.

It was only a matter of time before the net was bulging again and, this time, it was Pedro who obliged with 26 minutes gone. Messi was the provider as Pedro raced into the box and collected on his left foot before switching to his right and rifling home.

Messi had the ball in the back of the net again before the break, rounding the keeper after exchanging a lovely one-two with Gudjohnsen, but the offside flag was already raised before he tapped over the line.

Hibs threw trialist Steven Thicot into the action for the second half but he inadvertently helped Barca claim their fifth goal just two minutes after the restart.

A mix-up between Thicot and Rob Jones allowed Suarez Jeffren to race to the byline before cutting back for Bojan to unleash a volley from six yards.

To their credit, Hibs regrouped and Fletcher twice came close, drawing a decent save from Valdes, before firing over from close range after Colin Nish had broken away from the Barca defence to tee up the shot.

Instead, there was further punishment to come from the Catalan giants. Jeffren was again the supplier from the left and Toure squeezed past Jones to lash past McNeil with 21 minutes still to be played.
