Nicholson, a former West Brom academy player, has spent the last nine days with the Cumbrians, training with the first team ahead of their first friendly game.

But United boss John Ward said: "It was a really big ask to expect Dean to come in and challenge our established players, but I hope that he has enjoyed his time with us.

"He has worked hard, but we won't be pursuing things with him at this time. We wish him all the very best for the future, and we hope that he has taken something away from his time with us."

Scott Dobie (2), Danny Carlton and Luke Joyce were on target in the victory.
