Flamini flummoxed by full-back job

AC Milan star Mathieu Flamini has warned his club that they will be making him unhappy if he is forced to play at full-back again next season.

Flamini: Wants midfield role
Flamini: Wants midfield role

The Frenchman was forced to perform out of position on several occasions during the last campaign due to a shortage in personnel at the San Siro.

Milan attempted to solve the problem this summer, but a move for Aly Cissokho failed at the medical, prompting suggestions Flamini could again operate at full-back.

The 25-year-old, who has been linked with a return to former club Arsenal, has therefore stated that he does not want to play in defence in 2009/10.

"I don't want to play as a full-back, I am a midfielder," he told Sky Sport 24. "This year Milan will be strong in defence."

Flamini also insists that he has not told his ex-Arsenal colleague Emmanuel Adebayor to follow his lead and move to Italy.

"Adebayor? We talk sometimes but I didn't tell him to come here, we are just friends," he said.

"Look lets all just blame Bosman for his attitude. Fact is, hes a great player. He fits into the Arsenal system so well and Fabregas had his best form alongside him because he was there to clean up when Cesc put his play-maker glasses on. I'd love him back for a proper price, no 25 mill jokes like we're getting for Adebayor. Am I right guys? Haha

I don't understand why Wenger hasn't tried to tie De Jong, Michael Johnson or Micah Richards into the deal because the 3 of them satisfy a lot of what we need. Anyway, lets hope that money goes towards redevelopment and Flamini. I can't wait for Hleb to want to come back... he can get f'ed tho :)"

"IF u didn't left u are sure to play in Midfield 101% of the time ... IF only u didn't left..."

"I am getting sick of this guy and his comments. Same as Helb. Crying cause they cant get a game. What do they expect, they werent smashing players anyway, they just fitted in well to a fantastic side with a fantastic manager. Then they get big heads from a bit of interest from other clubs and they snap at the chance and dont even weigh up the cons. Young and naive with bad advice from greedy agents.. i really beleive that those two players believed they could make it at those clubs but i dont think anybody else did.. Now that they know they are not likley to cut it they want out... that's fine too, but they need to face the reality that they could be playing for the likes of Zenit, Bordoux, PSG..etc etc... I admire Fab & Van P, good kids who listen and get their head down.Helb, Flam, will not be remembered in ten years which is a shame as they did fit in well to the set up..."

"I think he's potentially a great holding midfielder who gives 100% in every game. The problem is his personality. Leaving the way he did was typical of the modern day mercenary footballer."

"The only reason why he left Arsenal is because he did not want to be a "joker" of the pack! He fancied himself after Beckenbauer - lead from midfield!! "

"I don't know why people would want this overrated journeyman back. He moaned when he was asked to play fullback for Arsenal too. He should have been grateful to be in the team. He than had one season where he managed to look competent at most in central midfield in a season where we finished 3rd. He was not good enough for the position permanently. He was no Gilberto and certainly no Vieira. The problem is we didnt manage to replace him with anybody better."

"i think he personaly left out of spite regrets his decision and now is stuck playing out of position in a team where he doesnt want to be id buy him bk but only at the right price be a big boost for cesc as its his mate and midfield partner "

"greengunner: to be fair to flamini, it ended up being more than £5K a week. The Euro appreciated up to 25% against the pound at one stage and is still up about 15% now. Also, I am unsure what the top tax rate is in Italy, but I assume it's better than the 50% he would be liable for here in the UK now"

"shibbyness, comparing him to Edu is perfect. One good season after we had shown loyalty and he got big headed and left. Edu was not a saint! Dodgy passport and first chance to leave he did."
