Sugar blasts over-spending clubs

Ex-Tottenham chairman Sir Alan Sugar has called for stronger punishments for clubs such as Leeds who get away with spending beyond their means.

Leeds went into administration last year but were quickly sold to a newly-formed company, of which current chairman Ken Bates is one of the directors.

The West Yorkshire side only missed out on promotion to the Championship when they lost to Doncaster in the League One play-off final - despite being docked points last season.

The Elland Road club currently occupy a play-off place this season, although 61-year-old entrepreneur Sugar does not believe they should be in such a strong position.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "Clubs should not be going bust and starting again the next day.

"It takes your heart away when you see clubs spending millions and millions and millions and millions and going bust, only to start again the following Saturday.

"It's unfair. They should be thrown out of the league, down to the fourth and fifth divisions and have to work their way back up, playing on Hackney Marshes."

"i pretty much agree with what he has said. but i feel really sorry for the fans. there should be caps on tranfers/wages and everything now i think to stop this sort of thing happening. i heard an interview on radio 1 2day and he said at the time of leeds spending he asked the then man utd chairman about how much money is involved with winning trophies and done his sums and it didnt even work out right if they won 4 trophies to what they were spending. it was all ridsdale tryin to live a dream where even he must have known at some point its going to crash and burn. fifa should keep a closer eye on teams spending and not allow the transfer if they they are spending out their means, bring in caps and end the days of 30m pound transfers. no 1 man is worth that much money where end of the day its the supporters who pay for it all watching teams play and all the tv money they get we all pay for it one way or another. "Our downfall didn't end the following saturday... it's been a constant downward spiral into League One. I'm sure that is enough of a lesson to convince any chairman not to do it again around here. We have been serverely punished for it and had Bates not been so cunning, we could well have dropped to the lower leagues. Teams like Man U and Arsenal have racked up much more debt than we had, they have a better repayment scheme than us it seems. And most clubs in the Premier League have some debt to their name. One minute it's "We got what we deserved" when things are going bad for us, but when we turn the fortunes around they complain the punishment wasn't good enough."

"what would alan sugar know about running a succesful football club.leeds will ALWAYS be a bigger club than spurs"

"Take no notice of Sugar,he was hated at Spurs,he's creamed off millions out of football and its fans so he should take care of his own business and leave football matters well alone...."

"Wise words Alan. Leeds are guilty of cheating, they spent beyond their means and they should have been thrown into the Conference. The reason that they managed to get to the Champions league semi and do well in the league is because they were spending money on players they could not afford.

It's not just Leeds, look around the world and teams like Lazio have been guilty of the same. Kick the cheats down to the lowest possible league so more clubs aren't tempted to do the same"

"Sugar must be an idiot with these sorts of comments. How would he justify Leeds playing on Hackney Marshes for starters.....not exactly home territory is it? leeds are not the only club to go into administration and the FL thought by deucting 15 points we'd end up in League 2....how wrong they were! Since then Leeds have not spent that much on new players.....the majority have been out of contract players signed for nothing. I bet Sugar didn't lose money when he sold off Spurs !! Maybe a ban should be imposed on Chairmen who sell their clubs at a vast profit !!"
