Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler admitted his men fell well below the required standard as they lost 2-0 at Shrewsbury.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff's thumping volley after half an hour was added to by an unstoppable second from Mark Wright three minutes from time as Shrewsbury gained just their second win in six games in all competitions.

The Gills took more than an hour to force a save from Shrews goalkeeper Chris Neal and never looked likely to force a comeback.

"We were nowhere near it to be honest," said Hessenthaler. "I'm certainly not happy and I'm disappointed for the fans because we didn't just turn up at all.

"Our body language, even in the warm up, we didn't look like we were at the races and I think that showed in the performance.

You can carry a couple of players but the whole team just didn't turn up and it's not acceptable.

"It just wasn't good enough and for me to say that hurts. I've told them that in the dressing room and that should hurt them as well. If we want to achieve something this season, we're kidding ourselves if we're going to turn up and play games like that."
