Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler conceded it had been a frustrating season despite a comfortable 2-0 final-day victory over Morecambe.
Goals in each half from Charlie Lee brought his tally for the season to six and helped the Gills sign off the season with a four-match unbeaten run as they missed out on a play-off spot by two points.
But the Gills' late surge was not enough to stop them ending a second-consecutive season a place outside in eighth.
"The important thing in the team-talk before the game was that we finished off on a win, because obviously we've missed out again on play-offs," Hessenthaler said.
"We've finished eighth again, eighth last year, losing out on goal difference, and eight again this season by just two points.
"I would probably go home and beat myself up if I looked back at some of the games where we should have got points. There's no point in me looking back over all of that, because I won't sleep very well. I've just thanked the players for winning the game, even though it was rather dull at times."
