Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon has described his successful recruitment of Jorge Claros from under the noses of Rangers as "a bit of luck".

Fenlon signed eight players during the winter transfer window, including Claros, who had been on trial at title-chasing Rangers.

Fenlon made his move for the Honduran, signing him on loan from Motagua, after Hibs' 4-0 loss at Ibrox last weekend, a result which keeps his side a point above Dunfermline at the foot of the SPL.

Asked when he discovered Claros was available, Fenlon said: "At about 6.20pm on the bus coming out of Ibrox.

"I got a phone call. I consider it a bit of luck.

"It's different circumstances, in fairness to Rangers and us.

"In the long run we probably couldn't afford him either - they're talking about £800,000 for a transfer fee, so we know we couldn't afford him.

"It suited us and it suited him. It obviously didn't suit Rangers.

"It's a good marriage at the moment for us. He can come in and play, get a bit of experience in our league and maybe try to get himself onto better things, because he's obviously capable of doing that.

"From our point of view it gives us a player that we've been looking for in that position for a while.

"We lost out on one or two in that area and then he came along."

Claros was one of four players signed on the final day of the window, with free agent Pa Saikou Kujabi and loan duo Roy O'Donovan and Matt Doherty also moving to Easter Road.

Fenlon added: "We're happy with what we've brought in. We're second last in the league and it would've been easy to turn it down if they were that type of player.

"I'm delighted that they've come in and they're willing to get into the scrap with us. We've got some in that have come to prove a point."

Claros is unavailable for Saturday's Scottish Cup fifth round clash with Kilmarnock, due to delays over international paperwork, but should be free to play the following week against Aberdeen in the SPL.

The last time Hibs won the Scottish Cup was 110 years ago, but Fenlon is concerned only about winning a match after two wins in 10 games since he was appointed boss in November.

He said: "We're looking to win football matches.

"If that brings with it getting into the next round of the cup, great.

"A league game with three more points would be preferable, but that's the way it is.

"We're living in the short term. We need to make sure we stay in this league."
