Bingo>> Must admit that my recollections of the detail of Rick Parry’s role at the club are beginning to dim in the mists of time and I probably need to re-read Brian Reade’s book “44 months with a pair of cowboys”. However, I think to totally denigrate what RP did for the club over 11 years (1998 – 2009) is a touch unfair. It’s easy to forget how far we had fallen behind the pack in the 1990s – certainly from a commercial perspective – but he did oversee a period where we at least got back to a position of challenging for PL and European titles and the team of 2007 – 09 period was one of the best and most star-studded in memory. I ask you one thing: In those months towards the end of the Hicks and Gillett tenure, where the whole executive set-up was tearing itself apart, would you have preferred to have Rick Parry still in there as a steadying, moderating, pragmatic influence as a lifelong LFC fan, or not? As I recall, H & G were out of control and clearly only had their personal/financial interests at heart, Benitez (lest we forget) was getting increasingly frustrated with the owners, and he was also partially out of control and was making football decisions that were primarily designed to snipe at the owners and NOT always designed for the benefit of the team. So, love him or loath him, Rick Parry probably held LFC together during this time. But I will dig out Brian Reade’s excellent book again…
