Bury caretaker manager Peter Shirtliff has confirmed he wants the manager's job at Gigg Lane on a permanent basis.

Shirtliff stepped in on Tuesday following Richie Barker's departure to take up the hotseat at Crawley.

And the former Mansfield boss admits the opportunity to fill Barker's shoes is one that excites him.

"I can understand Richie's reasons for going and, as it turns out, it's now a good opportunity for me and one I am looking forward to," he told Bury's official website.

"I'd like the job full-time but at the moment the chairman has asked me to steady the ship for a period - which I am quite happy to do and hopefully we can get some results from it, but let's just see what develops."
