Notts County boss Keith Curle admitted veteran striker Lee Hughes had changed his mentality since asking for a summer move.

Hughes, 36, hit the winner as the Magpies beat Shrewsbury 3-2 to go top of the table. He climbed from the bench to hit the clinching goal after a thoroughly entertaining clash which saw four goals scored in seven minutes in the second half of a topsy-turvy game at Meadow Lane.

Francois Zoko gave the hosts the lead before two goals in a minute - Matt Richards from the penalty spot and a stunning individual strike from Jermaine Grandison - put the Shrews ahead. But Jeff Hughes levelled the scores and namesake Lee clinched all three points.

Curle said: "I've had a conversation with Lee. He knows sometimes he will start and sometimes he is going to be an impact player.

"Lee wanted to leave. He wasn't happy as he didn't see himself fitting in to the way I wanted to play football with a lone striker being joined by two or three more.

"But now he has had a change of mentality and at 36 he is learning a new trade and applying his trade to a different system and he is reaping the rewards of changing his mentality."
