Johnson: Change will do us good

The Sky Blues skipper has welcomed the manager’s January policy as they bid to stay away from trouble in League One.

Josh McQuoid and Ryan Allsop’s loans from Bournemouth expire this month – with McQuoid definitely returning to the Cherries – while Jordan Clarke has joined Scunthorpe and Marcus Tudgay has been told he can leave.

Frank Nouble has signed from Ipswich after a loan spell and Aaron Martin made his loan from Yeovil permanent, penning an 18-month deal.

But rather than the changes unsettling the squad, Johnson reckons it can galvanise a side four points above the relegation zone.

“The manager has made the decision to make the team better and more confident. Sometimes it can help because players are coming in and people will fight for their position,” he said.

“It can help the team. We are professionals and most of the players are used to seeing this in their careers, we’re used to seeing players coming and going.

“It’s part of football and January will be a transfer window like always and we can get some good players.”

The Sky Blues are 18th after Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Swindon, which Johnson missed through injury.

They have won five, drawn four and lost four since their Ricoh return in September, although the ground has since been bought by Aviva Premiership side Wasps.

But, despite their inconsistent home form, Johnson said they are comfortable back at the Ricoh.

“We didn’t need time to settle at the Ricoh because we are home, it was harder to settle at Northampton,” said the 26-year-old. “The pitch is a lot better. Coventry are a team who are open and want to create a lot of chances.”
