The 23-year-old striker has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal and will start training with the side next week.

Van Veen has scored 16 goals in 20 games in the second tier of Dutch football this season.

But Iron manager Mark Robins has warned the club’s supporters not to expect too much too soon from the new signing.

Robins told Scunthorpe’s official website: “What I wouldn’t want is people to expect miracles straight away. He has got potential to be a real good signing for us and he has to make that transition because he has been playing in the second division of Dutch football.

“There was interest from other clubs – managers were ringing his agent last night while we were doing the deal. It was interesting to see the names linked with him. He could be a real coup for us.

“We know he can finish, he has that in his locker, physically he will be OK, he just has to get up to speed with the pace of the game and the style of football.”

Van Veen added: “(English football) is really fast compared to football in Holland – fast and physical. In Holland it is only fast so I will have to get on the weights and score a lot of goals.

“The plans for Scunthorpe going up is better than going to a club that could be going down from the Championship.

“I want to be successful here and help Scunthorpe get to the Championship.”
