Waring with the winner again

Mowbray will have had most to ponder after watching an unconvincing City slip to defeat thanks to a 56th-minute header from Waring as the Tykes sealed a fourth successive win.

The hosts had a scare in the fourth minute when City striker Dominic Samuel charged down Adam Davies’ attempted clearance, with the ball bouncing just past the goalkeeper’s left-hand upright.

The Reds responded and almost took the lead when Martin Cranie headed Conor Hourihane’s corner narrowly wide from six yards, before the woodwork denied City’s Marcus Tudgay’s precision effort from 20 yards.

Waring nodded Hourihane’s corner over the bar early in the second half, while at the other end Sanmi Odelusi headed Jim O’Brien’s cross tamely at Davies.

The deadlock was finally broken 11 minutes into the second half when Hourihane delivered a dangerous free-kick and Waring headed firmly past Burge at the back post.

John O’Sullivan went close with a couple of efforts and in a rare Coventry attack substitute Frank Nouble’s inviting ball across the six-yard box evaded everyone, while in injury-time Barnsley midfielder Ben Pearson cleared Matthew Pennington’s shot off the line as the hosts held on.
