Rochdale boss John Coleman will make a final decision on four potential new signings after next week's friendly with Blackburn.
Dale face Rovers at Spotland on Wednesday and four trialists - former Accrington duo Ian Craney and Ray Putterill, striker Danny Johnson and defender Matthew Pearson - are set for one more chance to press their claims.
"The four will all feature against Blackburn and then I will decide," Coleman told the Manchester Evening News.
"We do need an attacking midfielder and both Ian and Ray have done well. Both have had battles for fitness in the past but they both look in good nick."
According to reports, Rochdale had a bid turned down for another ex-Stanley man - Scunthorpe forward Bobby Grant - last week and Coleman remains keen on bolstering his attacking options.
"Next week I will step up my search for a striker," he added. "It isn't desperation time and we are certainly not panicking, but I would like another one. We have one or two avenues to pursue and me and Jimmy (Bell, assistant manager) will be doing that."
