Shrimps slip to Stags defeat

Daniel fired Mansfield into the lead with a stunning 43rd-minute free-kick that flew past Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche and ended up in the top right hand corner of the net.

It was a rare moment of quality in a first half that was full of thunder but lacked quality.

Morecambe had a golden chance to take the lead after only seven minutes when Mansfield defender Martin Riley gave the ball away on the edge of his own area but Jack Redshaw made a hash of his final finish and missed the target with only Alan Marriott to beat.

The Shrimps continued to look the more threatening and Jamie Devitt flashed two efforts just wide of the left hand post after cutting in from the left and Mark Hughes tested Marriott with a well struck low free-kick from distance midway through the half.

The second half saw few chances with Mansfield happy to sit back and allow Morecambe to dominate possession.

It was a tactic that paid off as the Stags broke with purpose and almost added a second when Matt Rhead’s looping header was superbly saved by Roche.

Morecambe’s efforts to get back into the game were hampered further when Andy Fleming was given a straight red card for a foul on Adam Murray although they did get close to snatching a late equaliser when Hughes volleyed inches over in the fifth minute of injury time.
