Mellon backs Wesolowski return

The midfielder suffered cruciate ligament damage in Town’s 3-0 win over Hartlepool earlier this month.

He is waiting for the swelling to go down before he can have an operation but Mellon expects the Australian to hit back.

“He wants to be the best injured guy the football club has had. He is still getting everyone up and making sure when he’s in the gym he is keeping the standards high,” he said.

“It’s a massive blow for the boy, he puts his heart and soul into everything he does. Everyone at the club loves his attitude and what he brings.

“He’s a positive guy. He will be thinking ‘this is what’s happened, I’m not going to be sitting about feeling sorry for myself but I’m not going to take people around me down with me’. He’ll come back stronger.”

Wesolowski joined on a free from Oldham last summer and had made 28 appearances this season, scoring once, with Shrewsbury second in League One ahead of Saturday’s trip to Newport.

They signed Keith Southern from Fleetwood on loan until the end of the season two days after Wesolowski suffered his injury.

Mellon added: “We brought in Keith and we might have to do a few things differently in terms of what Wes brought us but we have to get on with it.”
