Called up to the full England squad after only one Premier League start this season. If he played for Leicester, for example, he would not of been picked.
November 15, 2015 at 12:59 pm #706429You’re probably right John it probably says more about the complete lack of quality England have. He’s done the rounds a bit in the football league but can’t be deserving of a cap yet. Has he got duel citizenship? Maybe we’re trying to nip in first like with Welbeck
November 15, 2015 at 3:56 pm #706555Not sure Dandy, i think he is from Bury? Can’t see any other country being interested in him anyway. He hasn’t done anything yet! lol
November 15, 2015 at 3:57 pm #706558Dandy, good to see you back on here mate.
Given one PL game I guess it reflects the injuries and how bare the cupboard might be although to be fair Lingard does look like a prospect.Cheers 999
November 15, 2015 at 5:20 pm #706582The likes of Redmond at Norwich must be frustrated by this.
I actually think it says more about Woy and his lack of imagination – so he looks through the big clubs for any young players who have done anything and picks one.
It’s a shocker. He may be great but being picked on the back of one start is a joke.
November 16, 2015 at 7:36 pm #708043If he “played for Leicester”, I predict you wouldn’t be a fraction as outraged about is as you are now.
Remember 2 or 3 years ago when Smalling was called up for England, and he was always the current “why is he getting picked and such-and-such isn’t? It’s a joke”. Now he’s one of the best centre halves in the league. Perhaps these qualified coaches and scouts have a handle on the game of football that your standard armchair United hater doesn’t? Just a thought.
Besides, you make it sound like Lingard has just popped up overnight. Because you’ve only seen him play one Premier League game doesn’t mean he’s not been around for some time. It’s just that you’ve only just heard of him. He’s been excellent for the England U21 for some years now. His record for United’s U21 is very good as well. He had very good loan spells with Brighton, Birmingham and Derby and scored a lot of goals from midfield/out wide.
I don’t know why “starts” even makes a difference, because he’s played 4 Premier League games this season, and in one of them, he was the closest to breaking the deadlock in the Manchester derby. He’s also made two starts in the Champions League where in both games he was the best player on the pitch. Based on current form between the last international break and this one, he’s there on merit.
He’s done a hell of a lot more than Adam Lallana, Jonjo Shelvey and Fabian Delph have in the last few weeks. Even Cahill got picked, and he’s one quarter of one of the worst defences in the league currently. And of course Rooney got picked, and he couldn’t score if the goal mouth was the size of the Eurotunnel.
But yeah, the Lingard call up is just mad isn’t it?
November 16, 2015 at 8:20 pm #708061Lingard is a Warrington lad born a and bred like myself.
November 16, 2015 at 8:23 pm #708067Do the U21s have a competitive match? If so it’s understandable not to call up a player from a team who needs him more. That said did we really need another player called up?
Roy has said that they were watching him for a while, not just at Utd.
November 17, 2015 at 10:01 am #708427As always Evratime is spot on. Adding to that these are friendly matches and Hodgson must use these kind of matches to look at players. With all due respect to Leicester who have been fantastic this season, breaking into the Man Utd side is a lot harder as they have a big squad of star players. Jesse has taken the tough route to achieve that and that says a lot about his attitude. That kind of attitude is what Hodgson is also looking for in England players.
Talking about Leicester, I would have wanted to see Marc Albrighton getting the nod this time as he has been in good form this season, especially ahead of Lallana.November 17, 2015 at 10:26 am #708448Evratime – Yes Smalling has turned into one of the leagues best defenders, but he was being picked for England when he was nothing of the sort. All big teams get favouritism from the the national selectors, it’s a well known fact. Phil Jones repeatedly getting in the squad is an embarrassment. Roy Hodgson was showing less bias than previous managers, but the selection of Lingard feels like a step backwards tbh.
November 17, 2015 at 11:19 am #708550Whilst Lingard shouldn’t be picked so soon imo, hasn’t Roy always done this type of thing? I seem to recall some very strange picks for his Euro 2012 squad. Kelly, Henderson and Carroll were all picked despite poor seasons and/or lack of game time.
November 17, 2015 at 1:54 pm #708844Lingard has started 2 PL games.
November 17, 2015 at 2:14 pm #708877Surely Zaha or Redmond would have been a better option to call up, both players in form for their respective clubs yet both play for for smaller teams compared to UTD, Lindgaard is not deserving of a call up not when you have other players doing better than him in the league. The FA and Roy are a joke when it comes to selection, im an Arsenal fan and it amazes me every time Gibbs gets called up, not because he isnt talented but because he never plays and is always injured! England selection process is completely backwards and based off nothing more than who you play for.
November 17, 2015 at 2:21 pm #708889its always been this way for England, how many times have form players (over the course of an entire season) been over looked, in just about EVERY position, then as soon as one player comes back after injury, often not even played for the club, they get selected (and injured again)
i understand the need for a balanced squad but to many players KNOW they will be selected, to be fair there are a few players that ONLY seem to play well for England!
November 17, 2015 at 2:54 pm #708988As others have said, there are other proven midfielder who have done far more than Lingaard in justifying a place in the squad. It smacks of favouritism but that’s not a new thing. Redmond has been mentioned as has Zaha. Jordan Ibe or Ward Prowse have more experience and both have quality. In my opinion Dier & Ali were lucky to be involved with the seniors so soon. We give caps out for fun nowadays
November 17, 2015 at 3:30 pm #709036yep one youngster does well for a few games and called up, you dont see real progression form U21 to senior, surely it should for the most part be like a production line that way?!
November 17, 2015 at 6:03 pm #709168agree with Dandy.
I normally agree, or see something worthwhile, with Evratimes posts – but not this time.
I think to try and play the “ABU” card is way off the mark – nobody is objecting or commenting because he plays for United, but because he plays for a high profile club and its easier to get a cap when you play (albeit only twice) for a big club rather than being a good performer at a less fashionable club – its not just about United mate, poor comment. would be the same if he was at any of the other big 3 or 4 major clubs
November 19, 2015 at 6:06 pm #712006How do the young players get the experience? The pathway from 18 to 21/22 is blocked for a lot of players. Give youth a chance and see what happens. Jack Butland has been an exceptional keeper this season. He has made so many saves. He stood big then and made a superb save to prevent France scoring the other night. Ali has played a handful of games for Spurs, but when given the England chance he showed his talent.
Why are you questioning Lingard’s inclusion in the England team? Ashley Cole was an Arsenal reserve player when he was playing for England’s senior team. I remember what the commentator said when England beat Germany 1-5 in 2001. “Ashley Cole, from Arsenal reserve to England regular”.
yOu’re are just a pathetic hater! I reckon Hodgson should have Pochetino’s number on speed dial to find out who’s next to join the England team.
