Tranmere v Wycombe preview

Josh Thompson should come back into Tranmere’s squad to face League Two high-fliers Wycombe.

The defender missed the weekend’s loss to Cheltenham with concussion but Rovers boss Micky Adams is hopeful he can welcome him back given his dearth of options in that area of the pitch.

Michael Ihiekwe, only just back from an ankle injury, played 90 minutes on Saturday but full-back Liam Ridehalgh (back) was an unused substitute and Matt Hill (Achilles) and Marcus Holness (knee) are long-term absentees.

New signing Jordan Hugill (knee), brought in because of Cole Stockton’s hernia problem, could make his home bow after completing his first 90 minutes of senior football since April, while midfielder Rob Taylor will hope to overcome a hamstring strain.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth could welcome back two players to his side.

Matt McClure was a surprise omission in the draw against Stevenage on Saturday, but his manager revealed afterwards that a late hamstring problem forced the striker onto the bench.

Marcus Bean was also left out as a precaution following a knee injury, but he is expected to return at Prenton Park.

Aaron Pierre completes the second game of a two-match ban after receiving 10 yellow cards this season.

Tranmere manager Les Parry hopes to sign a striker on loan from a Premier League club in time for the home clash.

After missing out on two potential loan signings due to injuries in the past fortnight, Parry is aiming to bolster his squad ahead of the visit of the Chairboys.

Rovers winger Martin Devaney has been sidelined with a hamstring strain, although he could shake off the complaint and return to the fold this weekend.

But playmaker Andy Robinson and defender Mark McChrystal remain long-term absentees.

Robinson has a hamstring strain and is not expected to return for another month, while McChrystal will be out for at least two months because of a foot injury.

Meanwhile, Gareth Ainsworth and Stuart Beavon come back into the Wycombe squad.

Experienced midfielder Ainsworth and striker Beavon missed the 1-0 defeat at Yeovil in midweek with back and head injuries respectively.

Their return means that Dave Winfield’s absence with knee and groin problems aside, manager Gary Waddock has a full compliment of players to choose from.

Waddock has defender Marvin McCoy, midfielders Ben Harding, Matt Bloomfield and Kadeem Harris as well as striker Scott Rendell available should he wish to make changes on the back of a fourth straight league defeat.

The Chairboys have gone 400 minutes without scoring in League One since Joel Grant netted the final goal in a 3-1 victory at Leyton Orient on August 16.
