Yeovil welcome back midfielder Ed Upson as they look to end a run of six straight league defeats.

Upson missed Tuesday night’s defeat against Portsmouth as he served a one-match ban after being dismissed against Preston and his return is a welcome boost for manager Gary Johnson who is likely to be without three first-team players.

Defender Byron Webster will miss out having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Portsmouth, while attacker Lewis Young suffered ankle ligament damage on Tuesday night.

Reading loanee Gozie Ugwu limped off with a hamstring problem and is a major doubt for the struggling Glovers.

New signing Paddy Madden is expected to be involved after joining on loan from Carlisle on Thursday.

Johnson criticised some of his players for “not pulling their weight” in midweek and is expected to shake things up.

Joe Dunne is unlikely to make any changes for Colchester’s trip.

The U’s were without a win in all competitions this term until Dunne’s appointment as manager late last week.

A convincing 3-1 victory against Hartlepool followed before an unchanged starting XI disposed of high-flying Swindon 1-0 just 72 hours later.

And Dunne will see no reason to make any changes to a U’s side brimming with confidence.

Goalkeeper Mark Cousins continues to play through the pain barrier having dislocated a finger last weekend.

The U’s have failed to beat Yeovil in their last five attempts and were dumped out of this season’s League Cup at the first hurdle following an embarrassing 3-0 defeat in Somerset.

Rohan Ince and Gavin Williams are manager Gary Johnson’s only injury concerns. Ince joined the Glovers on a six-month loan deal from Chelsea in July, but is doubtful for Tuesday’s game after being helped from the pitch with a shin injury in a pre-season friendly against Newport.

Ince was joined by Williams on the sidelines for Yeovil’s final warm-up match against Exeter, with the Welsh midfielder left out due to a calf injury.

The squad includes a number of new players with Gozie Ugwu, Byron Webster, Marek Stech, Nathan Ralph, Lewis Young, James Hayter and Jamie McAllister all making the move to Huish Park.

Ben Coker will be assessed. The left-back sustained a thigh injury in Saturday’s 1-0 friendly victory over Bishop’s Stortford and faces a race against time to be fit for the first-round tie.

Manager John Ward told the Daily Gazette: “Ben’s injury was unavoidable. He’s got a dead leg after going into a challenge that was fair and honest.

“Both players wanted to win the ball but Ben got caught on the thigh. They are awkward ones; they can either clear up quickly or take a couple of weeks.”

Otherwise, Ward is not expected to have any other injury concerns for the encounter as the U’s look to make it through to the second round of the competition for the third successive season.

Yeovil will continue to be without suspended captain Paul Huntington.

Huntington serves the third match of a four-game ban for the visit of the U’s, and recent signing Richard Hinds is set to continue to fill in for the Glovers skipper in the heart of defence.

Manager Gary Johnson will be unable to call on full-back Joe Edwards, who has returned to his parent club Bristol City for the time being because of injury, but otherwise Yeovil have a full bill of fitness as they look to build on the 3-2 win at Wycombe in midweek.

On-loan Reading midfielder Lawson D’Ath will be hoping to keep his place in Johnson’s starting XI after making his full debut for the Somerset side at Adams Park.

Freddie Sears will go straight into the Colchester squad, subject to paperwork clearance, after joining on loan from West Ham.

Steven Gillespie is likely to have played his way into the starting line-up. The striker scored the U’s only goals in their games at Scunthorpe and Chesterfield only to be dropped for the 1-0 win at Leyton Orient prior to the recent cold snap.

Gillespie was again named among the substitutes for Tuesday’s clash with Brentford but responded in the best way possible by stepping off the bench to bag a late brace and clinch a 2-1 triumph, staking his obvious claim for a recall.

Elsewhere, manager John Ward is not expected to have any new injury or suspension problems.

Winger Ashley Vincent (hamstring) and defender Matt Heath (groin) continue to increase their fitness work and push for a place in United’s matchday squad having both returned to full training.

On-loan forward Gavin Massey has been recalled by parent club Watford and will not get the chance to line up against the Glovers, with whom he spent the first half of the season and duly bagged a brace in a 2-2 draw with Colchester in October’s reverse fixture.

Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton will look to name his strongest side even though safety is already assured.

A four-match unbeaten run has taken the Glovers out of the reach of the bottom four with two games to go but they are targeting a strong finish.

Defender Paul Huntington is available following his one-match ban and could return to the side.

But Skiverton was impressed with his side’s performance in the 2-2 draw at promotion-chasing Peterborough and may stick with the same line-up.

The Yeovil boss is in the process of deciding on players’ futures and those who do not feature in his plans for next season are likely to be left out for the final two games.

Despite sitting in 18th, the Somerset club have are only six points behind 11th-placed Carlisle.

Colchester will be without their in-form striker Steven Gillespie.

Gillespie, who scored four goals in his last five matches, has undergone an operation on his broken arm and will miss the final two games of the season.

Midfielder David Perkins is on the mend after three weeks out with a hamstring injury but the trip to Somerset may come too soon.

Centre-halves Magnus Okuonghae (ankle) and Pat Baldwin (Achilles) remain long-term absentees while winger Simon Hackney has a hamstring strain.

Boss John Ward is already planning for next term and has told winger Medy Elito, midfielder Sam Corcoran and defender Morten Knudsen they will be released at the end of the season.
