Argentina internationals Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez will miss Saturday's clash with Liverpool.
Central defender Coloccini has been ruled out with a groin injury, while midfielder Gutierrez has been allowed to return to his native country for personal reasons.
Steven Taylor, a potential replacement for Coloccini, is unlikely to have recovered in time from a hamstring problem, so Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is in line to start alongside Mike Williamson.
Liverpool welcome back Glen Johnson, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho to the squad after injury for the trip to Tyneside.
Johnson has been sidelined since the win over Manchester United at the start of September with an ankle injury, while Allen and Cissokho have been out since picking up hamstring and ankle problems respectively in the Capital One Cup victory over Notts County.
Lucas Leiva is also available after serving a one-game ban last time out against Crystal Palace, but his fellow Brazilian Philippe Coutinho remains sidelined as he recovers from a shoulder operation.
Sebastian Coates remains a long-term absentee otherwise Brendan Rodgers has no other fitness concerns to contend with.
