Colchester’s teenage midfielder Tom Lapslie could return to contention for the home game against Notts County.

Lapslie missed the weekend defeat at Doncaster due to an ankle injury sustained in the win against Bristol City in the previous match but is making “real progress”.

Recent signing Karleigh Osborne is expected to make his home debut after the on-loan Bristol City defender made his first appearance on Saturday, but midfielder Sammie Szmodics (foot) is unlikely to feature.

David Fox overcame a hip/groin problem to play the full 90 minutes at Doncaster and fellow midfielder George Moncur is pushing for a recall to the starting line-up after recovering from tonsilitis.

Notts County have no new problems as they look to arrest an alarming slide down the table.

The Magpies played well against Port Vale on Saturday but slipped to a ninth defeat in the last 12 matches and travel to Essex just three points above the relegation zone.

Boss Shaun Derry has the likes of Alan Smith, Will Hayhurst, Sean Newton and Gary Jones available should he wish to make any changes to his starting line-up on Tuesday night.

He will not be able to call on Bolton forward Kaiyne Woolery as the 20-year-old has returned to his parent club.

Captain Brian Wilson is suspended for Colchester’s clash at home to bottom-club County while the club’s lengthy injury list also shows no sign of easing.

Right-back Wilson received his fifth booking of the season in the U’s 2-1 defeat at Tranmere last time out and now serves an automatic one-match ban.

Midfielders David Wright (back) and Marcus Bean (hamstring) will also watch from the stands as Joe Dunne’s side aim to pick up what would only be a third win in 20 games.

Long-term absentees Freddie Sears, Gavin Massey (both hamstring), Sanchez Watt (thigh), Josh Thompson (ankle) and Drey Wright (knee) remain sidelined.

Notts County, meanwhile, will have an unchanged squad for the trip to Colchester.

On-loan striker Marcus Haber is still suspended. He will serve the final game of a three-match ban, after being sent off against Bradford at the end of last month.

Midfielder Joss Labadie (ankle) and defender Mustapha Dumbuya (thigh) are still not quite ready to return from injury but manager Shaun Derry has plenty of options should he wish to make any changes to his starting line-up after last weekend’s 3-1 home win over Gillingham.

The likes of Manny Smith, Enoch Showunmi, David Bell, Ronan Murray, Mark Fotheringham and Callum Ball will all be vying for places in Derry’s XI in Essex.
