Gillingham's dismal away record continued as Neil Cox's own goal and Simon Hackney's thunderbolt earned Carlisle a comfortable 2-0 win.
It was managerless Gillingham's sixth away defeat in a row and Carlisle did not have to be at their best to dominate.
Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's corner in the 14th minute ricocheted off central defender Cox across the line for the opener.
Gillingham, with the worst away record in the division, had a headed effort by on-loan striker Chris Dickson disallowed for pushing, while Mark Bentley fired a snapshot over the bar from 10 yards.
Carlisle had the lion's share of possession without creating too many clear-cut chances.
That was until Hackney took possession in the inside right channel 25 yards out to strike a dipping left-foot shot which caught goalkeeper Simon Royce flat-footed as it flew into the net.
