Championship outfit Blackpool were surprisingly dumped out of the Carling Cup after a 2-0 defeat at League Two minnows Macclesfield on Tuesday.

Blackpool's Ben Burgess had a goal disallowed for offside early on, and centre-back Ian Evatt then hit the underside of the crossbar.

But it was Macclesfield who took the lead in the 25th minute at Moss Rose when youngster Shaun Brisley poked the ball through the legs of stranded Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks.

Blackpool's Gary Taylor-Fletcher then missed the easiest chance of the game as he headed over the bar from four yards.

The key moment came in the 58th minute, moments after fellow captains Terry Dunfield and Keith Southern had been dismissed for fighting.

Blackpool failed to clear a free-kick from Jamie Tulley a minute later and striker Martin Gritton who headed home from close range.
