Robinho's debut goal was not enough as a bright new dawn for Manchester City ended in a 3-1 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Eastlands.

Robinho put City ahead in the 13th minute when he brilliantly curling home a free-kick after Jo was brought down by Ricardo Carvalho.

The Chelsea defender made amends just three minutes later, though, as he volleyed into the roof of the net after John Terry's header from Frank Lampard's corner struck Joe Cole.

And Chelsea took the lead in the 53rd minute when Lampard skipped past Richard Dunne and fired low into the corner.

Anelka was denied a penalty after seemingly being brought down by Micah Richards but he put the result beyond doubt in the 69th minute when he slammed home from Joe Cole's pass.

John Terry was sent off for a rash challenge on Jo in the 77th minute but Chelsea held on.
