Sunderland were fortunate to come away from Oldham with a 2-1 victory after being outplayed for most of the game at Boundry Park.
Adam Reed capitalised on a woeful pass from Andy Holdsworth to fire the visitors into the lead and a similar mistake by Reuben Hazell allowed David Dowson to double their lead in the 23rd minute.
The League One outfit pulled one back in the 55th minute when Jean Y'ves M'Voto hauled down Keigan Parker in the area and Pawel Abbott converted the resulting spot-kick.
