Managerless Colchester United stayed top of League One after coming from behind to beat Gillingham 2-1 at home on Tuesday evening.

The U's had lost manager Paul Lambert to rivals Norwich 24 hours earlier and caretaker boss Joe Dunne saw them fall behind in the 11th minute.

John Nutter's enterprising run to the by-line saw him cut the ball back and Curtis Weston was on hand to tap in from three yards.

Colchester equalised seven minutes before half-time through Scott Vernon, who swept home confidently after Kevin Lisbie picked him out.

The hosts scored the winner midway through the second half when Vernon's immaculate control and pass enabled Lisbie to fire home from 15 yards.
