Fraizer Campbell struck his first two goals for three months as Sunderland sealed an FA Cup fourth-round spot with a 3-0 home win over Barrow.
Barrow put the wind up Steve Bruce's men in a storming start which saw Marc Goodfellow's first effort blocked by David Meyler in the box in the third minute.
Paul Bond then skidded a shot into Marton Fulop's arms and the visitors came even closer in the ninth minute when captain Phil Bolland hammered a 30-yard free-kick which Fulop tipped wide.
But Sunderland grabbed a barely deserved lead in the 17th minute when Campbell played a deft back-heel into the path of Steed Malbranque, who swept home a low shot from eight yards.
The second arrived in the 52nd minute when Campbell headed Daryl Murphy's free-kick and the third came six minutes later when the same player nodded in Phil Bardsley's centre.
