Wes Thomas struck his 18th goal of the season to help Cheltenham to a 2-1 home win and heap more misery on Stockport.

Thomas struck the decisive goal after 67 minutes when he robbed County defender Mansour Assoumani and cut inside to calmly slot home past goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin. The goal was no more than Cheltenham deserved as they secured only their first win in nine games.

Town had taken the lead in the 21st minute through lively Exeter loanee Jake Thomson who had been sent clear by Jeff Goulding to slot past the advancing McLoughlin.

Thomson should have gone on to add further goals, McLoughlin tipping another goalbound effort around a post before himself slotting the ball wide with only the County goalkeeper to beat.

Two minutes earlier Stockport snatched an equaliser when catching Cheltenham napping with a clever short corner move that saw David Poole cross from the right, enabling the unmarked Aaron Brown to climb unmarked and head home.

Cheltenham had much the better of the second half and should have extended their lead after 80 minutes. Goulding got clear down the right and crossed for substitute Brian Smikle whose point-blank header was somehow kept out by McLoughlin who managed to save at the second attempt.
