Southend have signed Millwall midfielder Tamika Mkandawire on loan until December 8.
Mkandawire, who can also play in defence, has been out for a year with a knee injury. Following several reserve-team appearances for the Lions, the London club's 2010/11 player of the year has been allowed out on loan to continue his recovery and regain his match fitness.
The 29-year-old trained with the Southend squad on Friday but is not allowed to play in their FA Cup first-round tie against Stockport.
However, he will be able to feature for the Shrimpers in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
