Sky Sports understands Mick McCarthy is set for talks with Nottingham Forest over the vacant manager's job on Monday.
Forest are currently without a manager after new owners the Al-Hasawi family sacked former boss Steve Cotterill within two days of completing their takeover of the club earlier this week.
Glenn Hoddle was thought to be a frontrunner for the job but Abdulaziz Al Hasawi said on Saturday the club had not spoken with the former England boss.
McCarthy is another name to have been linked with the role and it is understood he will meet the Kuwaiti owners for talks at the beginning of next week.
The 53-year-old has been without a club since February after he was sacked by struggling Wolves and succeeded by Terry Connor, who was unable to save the club from relegation and has since been replaced by Stale Solbakken.
McCarthy spent almost six years at Molineux after joining from Sunderland, while the Yorkshireman has also managed Millwall and the Republic of Ireland national side.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson and former Sunderland and Ipswich manager Roy Keane are also thought to be in the frame for the Forest job.
