Spain coach verbally agrees to stay beyond Euro 2012

Vicente del Bosque has verbally accepted an offer to remain Spain coach beyond the end of Euro 2012, Spanish Football Federation president Angel Villar has revealed.

Del Bosque succeeded Luis Aragones at the helm of the national team after their Euro 2008 success and steered them to World Cup glory in South Africa last year.

His current deal expires after next summer's European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, but Villar insists an agreement has already been struck to keep him for longer.

Villar maintains that Del Bosque's future will not hinge on Spain's results at Euro 2012 and he will carry on even if they do not defend their trophy.

"Vicente has RFEF's word about the renewal of his contract, regardless of what happens at the European Championship," he told ABC Punto Radio.

"He is a man of a great human and sporting level, who has accomplished some historic results and when the RFEF renews your contract, you are delighted.

"A verbal contract is worth the same as a written deal."

Professional

While Spain cruised through their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012, they have been less impressive in recent friendlies and lost to England before being held by Costa Rica earlier this month.

Villar has defended the players against criticism, though, insisting their commitment should not be questioned.

"We are the world champions and we want to win," he said. "The players are professional.

"There is no slacking and no performances at a low level on purpose, but it is certain that, as a footballer, there can be moments in which the tension is higher than in other situations."
