Abidal own goal frustrates France; Marica at the double for Romania
France were held to a surprise draw with Belarus, while Romania were too strong for Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Eric Abidal scored an own goal to hand Belarus an unlikely 1-1 draw at home to a below-par France side as the top two in Group D met.
Fresh from lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy, Abidal turned Timofey Kalachev's cross into his own goal after 20 minutes, but after Florent Malouda levelled matters only two minutes later France would have expected to win the game.
However, in an evenly-matched contest they could not find a way through.
A goal either side of half-time from Ciprian Marica helped Romania to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Stuttgart striker Marcia scored a brace following Adrian Mutu's strike and Cristian Sapunaru saw a late penalty saved as Romania moved ahead of their opponents in the Group D table, although qualification for next summer's showpiece remains doubtful for both nations.
