Razvan Lucescu is set to take over as Rapid Bucharest coach after resigning as Romania boss.

Coach set for second stint at Rapid Bucharest

Razvan Lucescu has resigned as Romania coach just a day after their crucial qualifying win over Bosnia.

Romania revived their hopes of reaching Euro 2012 as Adrian Mutu and a Ciprian Marica double gave them a 3-0 victory on Friday night.

That took them above Bosnia and into third place in Group D behind France and Belarus.

But the national federation confirmed on Saturday that the 42-year-old coach had chosen to step down.

"His decision takes immediate effect," read a statement from the federation, who are yet to appoint a successor.

Reports in Romania claim Lucescu is now set to take over as Rapid Bucharest coach.

Title winner

A former goalkeeper, he first coached Rapid for three years from 2004, winning two Romanian Cups and reaching the Uefa Cup quarter-finals.

In 2007 he opted to move down a division to coach FC Brasov despite getting offers from clubs in Turkey, Italy and Ukraine, and he helped the club return to the top flight.

Lucescu took over the national team in 2009 after Victor Piturca's contract was mutually terminated after poor results in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, but Romania won just seven of Lucescu's 21 games in charge.

They resume their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a double-header in September against bottom nation Luxembourg and then group leaders France.
