Turkey grab important point; Gomez the hero for Germany

In what could be Guus Hiddink's last match in charge before a possible return to Chelsea, Turkey drew with Belgium, while leaders Germany left it late against Austria and Kazakhstan beat Azerbaijan.

Hiddink is thought to be Chelsea's No.1 target to succeed Carlo Ancelotti as manager, but he has maintained that he wants to maintain his focus on his duties with Turkey.

And on Friday night his team came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Belgium as the sides battle for second spot behind runaway leaders Germany.

The result means the hosts maintain their one-point cushion over Turkey, who have a game in hand.

Belgium opened the scoring after four minutes, with Marvin Ogunjimi grabbing his fourth goal in six matches as he profited from a slip by Turkey left-back Caglar Birinci.

The visitors equalised midway through the first half when Arda Turan ran down the right and set up Burak Yilmaz for an easy tap-in.

Belgium then wasted a great chance to seal all three points when Axel Witsel missed a penalty with 15 minutes remaining.

Goals at the end of each half from Mario Gomez ensured Germany made it six wins from six matches in Euro 2012 qualifying at the expense of battling neighbours Austria in the Ernst-Happel Stadium.

Germany's heavy first-half possession was rewarded when Gomez bundled the ball home in the aftermath of a corner just before the whistle.

Austria, whose qualification hopes are now all but over, picked themselves up admirably and got a deserved equaliser when Arne Friedrich turned David Alaba's cross into his own net.

But Gomez popped up again in the closing seconds to nod home Philip Lahm's fine delivery and maintain his side's 100 per cent win record.

In the early kick-off, a second-half double from Sergei Gridin secured Kazakhstan's first win of their Euro 2012 qualification campaign at home to Azerbaijan.

Gridin netted either side of substitute Vugar Nadyrov's 63rd-minute equaliser with all the goals scored in a nine-minute period.

The hosts had failed to score or register a point before Friday's game, but victory ensured they joined Berti Vogts' side on three points at the foot of the Group A table.
