Tottenham director Keith Mills insists it is not a 'foregone conclusion' that Harry Redknapp will be the next England manager.
Mills, a non-executive director at White Hart Lane, was speaking the morning after the night before when Fabio Capello quit his role as England boss.
The Italian unexpectedly departed his role on Wednesday evening, after he met with Football Association chiefs David Bernstein and Alex Horn.
As soon as Capello's exit was confirmed, Redknapp emerged as the red-hot favourite to replace the Italian tactician.
The Spurs boss, who hours earlier was cleared of tax evasion charges at the High Court, has previously said he would find it hard to turn the job down as he was already favourite to replace Capello after Euro 2012 when the Italian was due to step-down.
But with Tottenham riding high in third and playing some of the best football seen at the club in decades, Spurs look set to fight to try keep their boss.
"Harry needs to make a decision whether he'd like the job or to stay at Tottenham," Mills said.
"I'm sure Harry won't be the only candidate. Whether Harry's approached or not is not a forgone conclusion."
