TEAMtalk recalls five of the most memorable moments from Fabio Capello's time in charge of England following his resignation on Wednesday.

Fabio Capello leaves our shores with the best record of any England manager ever, yet with few truly sorry to see him leave.

While his record in qualifying was exemplary, England won just one of their four games at the 2010 World Cup in 2010 and crashed out of the tournament with a spectacular failure against Germany.

Here we look back at five moments he will be remembered for.

England thrash Croatia

Capello's appointment was welcomed by fans and media alike, and the signs in early friendly games under the Italian were promising, with England winning three and losing only once.

The Three Lions then began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Andorra before heading to Croatia for what was seen as a real litmus test for Capello and his players against the team that he prevented them from making Euro 2008.

Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick in Zagreb as England won at a canter in what arguably turned out to be the greatest day of Capello's reign.

Berlin hoodoo ended

England went on to beat Kazakhstan and Belarus after that night in Zagreb to make it four successive wins - their best ever start to a World Cup qualifying campaign.

Then, in November 2008, England travelled to Berlin for a friendly against Germany, who had not been beaten in the city for 35 years. But the Three Lions won again, 2-1 this time, with Capello's captain John Terry scoring the winner. Expectations were now at an all-time high.

First sign of trouble

England qualified for the World Cup at a canter, losing only once in their penultimate game in Ukraine.

Three friendly wins leading up to the finals in 2010 strengthened the opinion that England were in for a good tournament, but things did not get off to a great start in South Africa as Robert Green's mistake gifted the USA a 1-1 draw.

Things were about to get much worse, though, as England prepared to take on Algeria - and Wayne Rooney's reaction after that game summed up perfectly the indignation that the campaign was not going to plan.

Capello gets nasty with Pearce

While Rooney struggled to mask his anger after the draw against Algeria, Capello was unable to keep his emotions in check even during the action as England took on Slovenia in their final group game.

Jermain Defoe's goal kept the dream alive for another game but it was clear at this stage that Capello was well and truly feeling the pressure.

Lampard hits the crossbar

A disastrous start saw England 2-0 down in their World Cup last-16 clash against Germany before Matthew Upson pulled a goal back. Frank Lampard then appeared to have levelled things up shortly before half-time.

Only he hadn't - and the rest, as they say, is history.
