Robert Green: His heart must have been in mouth when Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner hit the near post. However, he was otherwise steady and assured on his first appearance since his World Cup gaff against United States. 7

Phil Jones (off 87): He's still prone to the odd needless mistake, but he is a great athlete and was unfortunate not to score a second for England on one foray forward. 7

Phil Jagielka: The Everton man is currently only on standby, but he put in a performance to remind Roy Hodgson that he is reliable cover if needed. 7

Joleon Lescott: Like Jagielka, put in a steady display, albeit the pair were not seriously tested by a lacklustre Norway side. 7

Leighton Baines: He went close with a low free-kick and generally impressed both defensively and moving forward on what was his third successive start. 7

James Milner: Like many of his team-mates, steady and reliable but unspectacular. However, he looked equally at home out wide and, later, in the centre, which could make him an important player for Hodgson. 6

Scott Parker (off 55): A typically industrious display from the Tottenham man, who showed no ill-effects from his recent Achilles problem. 6

Steven Gerrard (off 46): A mixed display of good and bad, most notable for a thunderous tackle on Tom Hogli that would have been punished in a competitive game. 6

Stewart Downing (off 85): Offered good balance on the left and proved his worth with a superb early cross for Carroll. Offered good support defensively, too. 7

Ashley Young (Off 72): Impressed playing behind Carroll and scored the first goal of the Hodgson era. Was still causing trouble when he was replaced. 8

Andy Carroll: Sent early diving header narrowly wide and kept Norway's sturdy defence occupied with a hard-working display. 8

Gareth Barry (on 46, off 72): Produced a solid display, but his early exit is a worry. 6

Theo Walcott (on 55): Looked threatening going forward but failed to make a couple of important tackles, something Hodgson will surely have noted in the wake of Milner's steadier display on the right. 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (on 72): Eager to impress on debut, possibly too much so. Took Young's role behind Carroll and will gain from the experience. 6

Jordan Henderson (on 72): Stands to gain most from any long-term injury to Barry. 6

Adam Johnson (on 85): Not enough time to make an impression.

Martin Kelly (on 87): Debut. Not enough time to make an impression.
