Javi Martinez: Looking for revenge

Javi Martinez: Looking for revenge

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez is determined to help his team-mates eradicate the memory of last season's German Cup final thrashing by Borussia Dortmund.

The two sides meet again at the quarter-final stage tomorrow night with Bayern gunning for revenge following their 5-2 humbling last May.

Since then, two-time defending Bundesliga champions Dortmund have been swatted aside in the title race with Jupp Heynckes' Bayern establishing an 17-point lead at the summit. Dortmund are second, a point ahead of Bayer Leverkusen.

Spain international Martinez only joined Bayern in the summer from Athletic Bilbao but he senses an eagerness within the Bayern squad to right the wrongs of that evening in Berlin and extend their domination into the cup competition.

He told www.fcb.de: "I saw highlights of the match on TV. This rematch does have a little bit of a revenge feel to it.

"It's an additional boost to our motivation."

Club-record signing Martinez struggled to find his best form prior to the winter break but admitted a two-week rest over Christmas enabled him to recharge his batteries.

He added: "Unlike the summer, I had a two-week vacation over Christmas, more time off than I've had in years.

"It did me the world of good and I think I can be even better in the second half of the season.

"The transition (to the Bundesliga) was not easy and you have to allow time for it. But I think German football suits me well. It's physical and direct, and I like that."

The sides last met in December with Dortmund leaving the Allianz Arena with a point following a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Martinez is forecasting another closely-fought battle against Jurgen Klopp's talented young side.

He said: "Obviously, the Bundesliga fixture in early December is still fresh in the memory. It was a good encounter and very intense.

"I'm expecting the same in the cup quarter-final, although there's even more pressure because it's a knockout match. But we're ready."
