Adkins could be loner

Adkins, appointed as Nigel Clough’s successor at Bramall Lane last week, is unlikely to get vast amounts of money to spend so could target temporary signings.

It is a tried and tested method for promoted teams in League One recently, with all three clubs that went up to the Championship last season relying on loan players to help their cause.

“You look at the teams in the Championship and League One, they have utilised the loan market extremely well,” Adkins said.

“Because the finances are getting tighter and tighter, to actually buy someone and pay their wages over a long period of time can be quite damaging to a football club.

“So to use the loan market is something that successful teams appear to be doing a lot more now and obviously that’s an avenue we can go down and explore to enhance the group of players we’ve got.”
