Adkins: League One is tough

Adkins will bid to end the Blades’ five-year spell in League One next season and has a proven track record of winning promotion.

He twice led Scunthorpe out of the third tier and guided Southampton to successive promotions to the Premier League in 2012.

“Our first focus is getting our club moving forward and the aim is to get ourselves promoted from League One,” Adkins said.

“That’s all our focus should be at this moment in time.

“Maybe you could probably class the Championship and the managerial casualty rate, the desire to get to the Premier League is such that last season the average tenure of a Championship manager was only seven months.

“So the pressure to get out of the Championship and into the Premier League, on that stat alone would suggest that the pressure is more to make that jump than from League One.

“But trust me, to get out of any division is always a massive challenge because there’s only a couple who are going to be able to go on and do it.”
