Al Ahli believed they would be able to take advantage of certain clauses in the 29-year-old France international’s contract, but it Sky Sports understand those clauses are not what they thought.

Newspaper reports earlier in the week claimed Al Ahli were ready to trigger a £7million release clause in Gomis’ deal at the Liberty Stadium and offer the player a salary of £3.5million-a-year tax-free.

Gomis joined Swansea on a free transfer from Lyon last summer and scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, although he finished the season strongly with six goals in his final 10 league games as he made his mark following Wilfried Bony’s departure to Manchester City.

Swansea manager Garry Monk is also keen to keep Gomis and said recently he is not looking to sell any of his key players during this transfer window.

Monk also said in May: “He (Gomis) is here to stay. Of course he was frustrated in the early part of his time here because he is a big striker and people forgot what he had done in his career.

“He’s played Champions League, he’s played international football, he’s scored a big number of goals in every single season.

“He’s a top player who wanted to feel pride in what he was achieving and being that number one, but he was never a problem. You do say some silly stuff at times, but I knew he could score goals in this league and contribute to this team.”
