Chelsea are reportedly lining up a ‘double your money’ move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium star has yet to agree a new, improved contract with the club, despite having three years remaining on his existing one, and that has alerted Blues boss Antonio Conte.
Conte is looking to add another central defender to his squad before the transfer window shuts on August 31 and is hoping to take advantage of Tottenham’s wage ceiling of £80,000-a-week.
Alderweireld, 28, earns a basic salary of £49,000-per-week but Chelsea are ready to double that to get their man, according to the report in The Sun.
The £42million arrival of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax could well mean that Spurs are preparing for Alderweireld’s potential exit, while they are closing in on highly-rated Argentinean centre-half Juan Foyth, 19, too.
The possible loss of the Belgium star would break up arguably the best central defensive pairing in the Premier League, in Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, and would certainly deliver a huge blow to Tottenham’s title ambitions, as Sanchez will almost certainly need time to bed in.
