Felipe Anderson has confirmed Manchester United saw a near-£40million approach for his services rejected by his club Lazio last summer.
The 22-year-old was strongly-linked with a move to Old Trafford during the January transfer window, although the alleged interest in the Brazilian midfielder was flat batted by club sources at the Serie A club.
But amid reports United are set to make a renewed approach for the player over the summer amid part of a projected mass squad overhaul, Anderson has revealed that Louis van Gaal tried to sign him last summer.
After confirming the Serie A side rejected a £39.5million bid from United, Anderson told UOL: “An offer came in last year from Manchester United. Lazio have confirmed this and preferred to keep me to have a great season.”
Despite spending around £250million since taking over at Old Trafford, Van Gaal has failed to lead them back to the top of English football.
The Dutchman has found himself under increasing pressure, with Jose Mourinho heavily tipped to succeed him in the summer.
