Anderson: England confidence is high

Anderson expects a strong response from the tourists in Thursday’s second Test at Lord’s.

“We knew how crucial it was to start the series well; we didn’t want to be having to fight back into the series,” said the Lancashire seamer.

“It was a great start for us, I thought we played outstandingly well throughout the four days. With the Australian team you know that they’re going to come back fighting strong so it puts a little bit more pressure on us to make sure we keep improving but it’s done a great deal for our confidence.

“We were positive going into the Test but I think when you play like that you can only gain confidence from performances like that. I think also it was great to see all eleven players contributing with bat and ball in some way. Hopefully we can kick on now at Lord’s.”

Several Australian players were heavily criticised for their performance in the first Test, most notably batsman Shane Watson, with some down under calling for a change in team selection.

“Their selection is not really an issue for us,” said Anderson.

“We’re really happy with the way we performed, we know we’ve got to keep improving because they’re going to come back strong no matter what eleven they pick.

“We’ll focus on what we want to, to be able to improve, that’s the main thing. We focus on us, we focus on trying to play positive cricket and just keep that train of good thoughts going through to the next Test.”
