Arsenal are close to announcing the signing of CSKA Moscow star Aleksandr Golovin, according to a Russian-based agent.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been touted as a target for the Gunners for quite some time, but it now appears that Arsene Wenger is nearing a deal after several favourable scouting reports.
A deal for the player is expected to set Arsenal back around £12.5million, with the player likely to stay on loan with CSKA until the end of next season before linking up with Arsenal in the summer of 2018.
And Sandro Varga, the agent of former Arsenal star Oleg Luzhny expects the deal to be announced not long after Arsenal secure the £52million capture of Alexandre Lacazette.
Journalist David Sansun, who writes for Russian Football News, relayed Varga’s words on Twitter.
“@sportsdailyru Asked if he was at Russia vs Mexico for work or pleasure: ‘Arsene Wenger called me, asked me to watch Golovin again,’ he said.
“‘He was going to come but his scout in Russia sent him 6-8 positive reports, so he asked me to watch him instead’.”
Speaking to Russian newspaper Sport Express, Varge continued: “For Russia, the rise will be greater if Golovin goes to Arsenal.
“The generation of Arshavin and Zhirkov played in England [previously].
“Golovin has an interest for Arsenal, money is not a problem.
“I think Wenger will pay £10m – £15m for him.
“The leaders of Arsenal forced him to spend money this summer [and] gave him £100m [to spend] on transfers.
“And Wenger, on the contrary, does not want to buy anyone at that price, it is [more] interesting to [him to] find [young] talent and bring to perfection.
“Coaches, usually all, beat out money from the bosses on transfers, and Wenger works differently.”
