Arsenal: Failed to impress against Bayern Munich

Petr Cech and Olivier Giroud were the only players to avoid heavy criticism from the press following Arsenal’s 5-1 defeat at Bayern Munich.

Arsenal’s humiliation at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night leaves them with a mammoth task to make the last 16 of the Champions League, with second-placed Olympiakos six points clear in Group F with only two games remaining.

Giroud received an average mark of 6/10 from the Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and ESPN FC having scored Arsenal’s consolation goal in Germany, but even he did not completely escape criticism, with the Mirror saying his strike was ‘out of keeping with the rest of the night’.

The chasm between the teams on the night is perhaps best summed up by the fact Cech was rated as their best player despite letting in five. The Czech Republic goalkeeper received an average mark of 6.625, with only ESPN FC awarding him less than 7/10.

At the other end of the scale, the Daily Mail rated Joel Campbell’s performance as 3/10, saying he ‘looked way out of his depth’, while Mathieu Debuchy was awarded only 3.5/10 by the Daily Mail.

The Frenchman’s average from the four sources, 4.125, was the lowest of all Arsenal’s starters, with Campbell (4.375), Gabriel (4.75) and Mesut Ozil (4.75) also scoring less than 5/10.
