Arsenal players are set to lose out on millions if they fail to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
The Gunners are currently fifth in the Premier League, five points behind Liverpool in fourth spot, although they do have two games in hand. Manchester United are also hot on the heels in sixth place.
There’s a realistic chance that Arsenal could miss out on a top-four finish this season, which could even see some star players receive a pay-cut, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
If they do fail to qualify for the Champions League, the club will miss out on millions. Last season, Arsenal received £46.7million for reaching the knock-out phase of the competition.
In contrast, Liverpool received £33.1million as prize money for reaching the final of the Europa League, while Tottenham earned £18.3million for their Europa League exertions, a massive £28million less than Arsenal’s Champions League return.
Arsenal were (once again) eliminated from the competition at the 1st knockout stage this season, losing 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich. They will meet the German side again in pre-season, with both clubs taking part of the International Champions Cup in China.
The game between the sides will take part on July 19 and will be followed by a game against Chelsea three days later atBeijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium.
Elsewhere, another poor season has seen the club plan for life after Arsene Wenger, who could depart the club at the end of the season. Gunners’ chiefs are now on the search for a sporting director, which you can read about here, to take control of the many jobs Wenger currently undertakes at the club.
