Town opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Ryan Gilligan’s corner from the right was met by an unmarked Colin Larkin at the near post and he headed the ball into the bottom left-hand side of the goal.

Six minutes into the second half, Charlie Mulgrew saw his 30-yard free-kick from the right turned onto the bar by goalkeeper Mark Bunn, and the ball bounced back into the path of Barnard, who slotted home.

Bunn then pulled off an acrobatic save to deny Adam Barrett a close-range header and Daniel Jones cleared Tommy Black’s shot off the line.

Southend’s James Walker saw a looping effort rebound off the bar before Gabor Gyepes came close for Town but his header flew just over the bar.
