Slaven Bilic believes West Ham’s 2-0 win over Newcastle was proof of the good work they did in the transfer window over the summer.
Dimitri Payet, a £10.5million signing from Marseille, scored both goals at Upton Park as the Hammers rose to fifth, with on-loan Chelsea winger Victor Moses another impressive performer on his debut.
Bilic feels the performance vindicated the club’s summer spending spree, which also saw them spend £7.9milllion on Angelo Ogbonna and £7million on Michail Antonio.
“We fully deserved the three points, we were better from the start, we scored at the right time,” Bilic told BBC Sport.
“Newcastle put us under a bit of pressure as we were defending too deep. In the second half I was proud, because we were solid, good at keeping the ball and great at counter attacks.
“It is small proof we really did well in the transfer window. Payet is a player I wanted from the start.
“I have known him for a long time, he is one of those players who is not only a great player but he makes players around him better.”
