Villa made a bright start with Young firing an 18-yard volley beyond Maik Taylor for the opener after 28 minutes.

And Villa extended their lead three minutes before the interval when Young’s free-kick picked out Carew and the beanpole Norwegian flicked a header past Taylor.

Gareth Barry then got on the wrong side of Liam Ridgewell and crossed for Carew to tap home his second from six yards after 53 minutes.

Young claimed his second of the game after 63 minutes, following up after Taylor had saved his with legs to fire home from eight yards before Mikael Forssell slotted home for Blues.

But any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Gabriel Agbonlahor netted in the 78th minute with a low shot.
